| The passing of Mr. Koontz' beloved Trixie has prompted him to put together an amazingly complex tale of evil and good (in that order). Indeed, there are only 3 really good human characters in this book, and I don't really think he said enough about the dog's capabilities. His love of golden retrievers is well explored. (I like Labs, myself...) Amy Redwing and Brian McDonald do their best to out-smart the bad guys, which are plentiful, and plenty bad. Mr. Koontz uses his usual blend of humor and intensity to create another fast, intriguing read, with good characters. Sometimes he goes on too long to describe various situations to prove a point, but he's a good writer and always centers things without losing sight of the objective. The dog, Nickie, should've had more input throughout, but I enjoyed reading it and had a good ride. I love Koontz, and have read everything that's available by him. Without blabbing away the plot, the ending was unsettling; but to paraphrase Mark Twain: I don't know if dogs go to Heaven, but when I die, I want to go where they go. |
