A Review at the Midnight Hour

I'm not an avid reader of this sub-genre of fantasy, but I enjoy a good mystery and find vampires and werewolves intriguing fodder for a story. That said, let me give a quick breakdown for parents and teenagers looking to upset their parents. Red=the book contains this and it is not necessary to the plot. Yellow=the book contains this and it is necessary to the plot. Green means the book specifically does not contain this.
Language: Red. (Having served in the military, I'm used to it, but even I found it a little disturbing as part of the narrative.)
Drug Reference with Approval: Green. (Does contain a drug reference, but it's not something that's mentioned as being good.)
Sexual Content: Yellow. (Contains a scene about rape. Sexual content is the "the room darkens" variety: it isn't graphically described. As a further parental caution, sex only comes as a form of punishment.)
Violence: Yellow. (Many times the author just mentions the presence of blood and leaves the rest to the imagination of the reader. When something is described more graphically, the author has a reason for doing so and still limits the description to only what is necessary.)
4 Stars: I enjoyed the book and will probably read at least the next in the series. The book alone though isn't enough to make me commit to the author and the series totally.
Kitty Norville is a radio DJ and fairly new to being a werewolf. She finds that she has a knack for listening to people and bulling her way through talking about other's problems that leads her, almost unwillingly, into hosting a talk show. Her audience is the part of werewolf and vampire society that needs the kind of public affirmation that her show provides.
But Kitty is new enough to the supernatural side of society that she continues to make her share of big mistakes and social faux paus. Like a true hero, she lives with her mistakes and continues to try and make things better. In making these corrections, she often finds that she's made herself and some of the people around her better as well.
This novel is a brilliantly conceived coming of age story, with enough grit and pitfalls to keep it believable. Anyone of any age that has ever had to rethink who they are and where they're going should relate readily with the main character.
While not an "edge of the seat" thriller, it does keep your attention and I read it easily in two sittings. |
