This is a welcome return to the lives of Michael, Brian and Anna Madrigal, familiar characters from the Tales of the City series.
I got the sense that this novel was more autobiographical than the previous ones, as Maupin reflects on how things have changed, yet how the themes of love and loss remain.
I learnt some stuff about contemporary gay men's culture in North America from this novel (.e.g about "manginas" and the new way of inhaling pot) but I'm not sure I learnt a whole lot more about the beloved characters of Mouse and Anna Madrigal.
Not a bad read, but perhaps a book in search of a centre, not unlike its central character. |
