Comparisons and Contrasts between the book and the movie
|
| "Because of Winn Dixie" is truely a charming story about a girl and what she learns one summer from having a very special dog. The movie portrays the book pretty acurately for the most part. There were differences in some of the characters though. For example, the movie creates a strong character in Opal's landlord, whereas the book only gives that charater a few sentences to describe him. The movie also interprets the character of the pet store manager, Otis, much differently than the reader would. The movie shows Otis having a comical relationship with the parrot in his store, as they throw rude comments at each other. Also, in the movie the preacher gives Opal a much harder time about keeping Winn Dixie, he even has her make 'lost dog' signs, which does not even occur in the book. Another interesting difference between the book and the movie was that the book says the preacher tells Opal all ten things about her mother one night; the movie has the preacher tell Opal nine things at one time and the tenth a completely different time. Overall these differences were added for dramatic purposes and did not alter the main structure of the story. The movie was also helpful to visualize Winn Dixie and how he smiled. To get all the details and a more personal view of the story it is necessary to read the book, but the movie does not do a bad job at portraying the events of the book. Like all books that are turned into movies it is more beneficial to read the book than watch the movie. |
