The World Is Flat [Updated and Expanded]: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century description
Updated Edition: Thomas L. Friedman is not so much a futurist, which he is sometimes called, as a presentist. His aim in The World Is Flat, as in his earlier, influential Lexus and the Olive Tree, is not to give you a speculative preview of the wonders that are sure to come in your lifetime, but rather to get you caught up on the w ... review details

♥♥♥♥♥ The best snaphot of the world economy ever written
The World is Flat. What does that mean? The term is now understood (by the droves of people who read this book) to mean the economy has become Internet savvy, outsourced, and globalized. It means, the hierarchies that previously defined roles and salaries are rapidly disappearing.

Rather than a 'rant' about 'shipping our jobs overseas', this book explains what Americans will have to do to stay competitive in the Flat World. Americans can no longer rely on our traditional roles, education, and understanding about how things are done. We need to learn to adapt to the Flat World. We need to become innovators, 'collborators', 'localizers', 'explainers', and 'leveragers'.

What I especially was inspired by was this concept of 'homesourcing' employed by innovative companies like Jet Blue. The idea is that our society would be better off if more moms were able to to be at home with thier children. In this current age, there are a great number of well educated, stay-at-home moms who would like to work some in order to contribute to family finances. However, the moms would not work full-time so as to be present for their children. Thankfully, companies and economists are starting to catch wind of the important source of well educated, available labor, who are available to work from home with almost no overhead at all. Further, stay-at-home moms may not need benefits, assuming the husband is the breadwinner. What a great finding!

Thank you, Thomas Friedman for teaching me about the Flat World.
