♥♥♥♥♥ This Book Was A Must Read For Me
Having just turned 50, Boom, written by Tom Brokaw, really hit home. For me the year 1968 was the beginning of personal awareness. For the nation, 1968 was also a crossroads. The rise of the Anti-War movement sent ripples that also brought about the civil rights movement and the women's movememt. While the escalation of the war brought a general distrust of government. Creativity and experimentation by artists like Andy Warhol and the Beatles ushered in an era of psychedelic drugs.
It was the year of Martin Luther King's assasination, Bobby Kennedy's assasination, riots in Chicago at the Democratic National Convention, and two American Medal Winners giving the Black Power Salute at the Mexico City Olympics.
Tom Brokaw. in his anchorman style, talks to the writers, musicians, artists and politicians on both sides of the fence in what turns out to be a very balanced report on a very controversial era (the 60s). He also speaks briefly of his own experiences, while not revealing which side he actually is on. Brokaw in many spots in the book, compares the controversies surrounding the Viet Nam conflict with today's arguments over Iraq. He does have tendencies to ramble in spots but on the whole, a very worthwile review on an era 40 years past.
