| M.R. James said of his ghost stories, "If any of them succeed in causing their readers to feel pleasantly uncomfortable when walking along a solitary road at night fall, or sitting over a dying fire in the small hours, my purpose in writing them will have been attained." In this beautifully done collection of ghost stories (my second from NAXOS) his purpose has been attained. As with THE MOONLIT ROAD collection, the readings are introduced by haunting music, this time string selections from Vieuxtemps and Chausson, which adds to the mood of the readings. The stories include: OH WHISTLE AND I'LL COME TO YOU MY LAD, THE MEZZOTINT, and RATS by M.R. James...plus THE SIGNAL-MAN and TO BE TAKEN WITH A GRAIN OF SALT by Charles Dickens. Narrator Stephen Critchlow has a voice made to tell such stories; I hope I can find more audiobooks he has narrated. A chilling collection of two and a half hours, very well made, at a fair price. Highly recommended. |
