♥♥♥♥ Rough Start, Unresolved Ending--But Still Enough to Like...
The beginning of this story is very rough--the characters and situation are uninteresting and very derivative. Delilah Street is a television reporter in Kansas, specializing in paranormal stories since zombies, vampires and werewolves revealed themselves to the world after Y2K. A bad date with a vampire anchorman results in the loss of her dog, her job and her house--and a move to fresh territory: Las Vegas, where she wants to search for a dead body that she saw on CSI Las Vegas that happened to exactly resemble her, down to her jeweled nose stud.

The true action doesn't get going until Las Vegas, where Delilah meets up (rather improbably, but interestingly) with former FBI man Ric Montoya, handsome, stylish and a dowser for corpses. Together, they find a pair of bodies buried in the park--part of an old mystery tied up with Early Vegas when the Vampires and the Weres and the Mob fought for power. This mystery actually starts the plot going, even though it drops in and out of focus. However, the characters and creatures and strange magic that are introduced are interesting and amusing.

Delilah is a tall, strong woman, but quite aside from the crazy events of her immediate past, also has plenty of vulnerabilities and mysteries. She was an orphan who was oddly never adopted (it's commented upon, but it would have been a bit more realistic if there was some better explanation for why a perfectly healthy abandoned baby wasn't snapped up right away). She has phobias she can't explain and during the story has powers she also doesn't know about. She also doesn't give out on a first date even given some alluring men, which is refreshing. There are sex scenes, which is fine since the sex doesn't become a focal point for the plot. I enjoyed Ric, who has secrets without being the typical wounded, brooding but invulnerable type. He's much like Delilah to some extent, fairly up-front and not too complex most of the time, but with unexplored depths. Delilah's new dog, a rescue from the shelter, is fabulous, a wolf-hound who is a major character on his own, with his own secrets and abilities. There's also the mysterious Christophe, albino singer in a rock band and also the boss of a major hotel-casino-resort. And a number of other characters who are not your typical vampire and werewolf... in fact most of them are undefined.

The problem is that most all of these tantalizing mysteries are not tied up by the end of this book. It leaves a lot to be deliciously explored in future books if the series continues (which I hope it does), but it can be frustrating for the reader. It would have been nice if at least another part of the mystery of the bodies had been revealed at the end--closing at least that minor story arc, but sadly, it was also left hanging.

I almost stopped reading at the beginning of the book since it seemed so disjointed and derivative, but I found that I really enjoyed the characters once they started working together in Las Vegas. Although there were improbabilities and threads hanging everywhere, I was still caught up enough to enjoy the read and at the end I hoped for the next book to come out soon. Hopefully the next part of the story--and writing--will do these characters and the setup justice.
