♥♥♥♥♥ Regrettably, this Darcy is flat and left me wanting.
I have read and own almost every P&P or Jane Austen sequel, prequel or adaptation out there and believe I am very supportive and generous in my critiques regarding novice authors who also love this genre. I bought this in hardback after seeing a recommendation for it at the Merton Assemby site. I regret this novel has been difficult to get through. Not that the language was challenging (because Jeffers paraphrases almost all of Jane Austen's original words and dialogue into easy modern language) or that the story is far fetched. It's just dull. It seems that JA's original has been dumbed down, and lacks all the wit and amusement of the original. In reading each page, I felt as if I was in a classroom lecture and being dictated to of every nuance, detail and character in JA's masterpiece. Although this novel is sopposed to be from Darcy's perspective, there are many incidents where Lizzy's perspective is explained as well, leaving nothing for the reader to speculate or feel compelled to keep reading. I was disappointed in Jeffer's sloppy choice of words... as in describing Lizzy's laughter as a "gurgle" and this Darcy has the tendency to want to "scream." Her interpetation of his wooing her at Hunsford, to me, is ill-conceived. She writes that he was trying to win her love, although a novice in these particlulars. I had always understood that Darcy was seeking her out because he enjoyed the pleasure of her company while struggling with his regard for her; and her affection for him was a non-issue... THAT is why, when she soundly rejects him, he is so shocked. (He assumed she would accept him if for no other reason than the compliment he has bestowed on her by even asking her to be his wife. That is why at the end, he is able to profess she taught him through her words at Hunsford how to be the man she deserved and worthy of her love.) I really wanted to like this story because Darcy and Elizabeth are my favorite literary characters and do so enjoy reading other aspects and interpretations. But I felt that having an entire novel sopposedly devoted to his "Passions", Jeffer's Darcy was a bit flat. I will admit that the best parts of this book are when the author strays from canon P&P and relates events not from the JA's original. Unfortunately, this doesn't occur enough and her own original story doesn't really appear until well past the halfway mark. I hate to speak ill of any Darcy book, but there you have it! Better bet would be to buy Pamela Aidan's Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman series or Amanda Grange's Mr Darcy's Diary.
