This Man Says "Bravo!"
|
I'm a man in his late 30s and I'm quite honored to admit that this book was thoroughly satisfying. It was one of my first romance novels (as well as my first McNaught title), and it definitely helped open up an entirely new world of reading for me. In fact, to this day I routinely pull this book off the shelf every few months and re-read it just for sheer enjoyment.
The characters, environment and settings are instantly recognizable to anyone who's ever spent a little time in the urban business world, even allowing for the passage of time since its original 1984 publishing date. Nick and Lauren were both remarkably well-developed, considering the fairly compact length and fast pace of the book. The corporate intrigue and espionage was very believable and much more accessible to me than some hackneyed murder subplot that is found in too many such novels. I could easily relate to Lauren's sense of awkward disorientation in the foreign world of power and money in which she was unexpectedly thrust - always the constant little reminders of not really belonging and never feeling fully secure. Nick was a perfect example of the man ruthlessly stroking his ego and exploiting his social connections, continuously seeking transitory thrills in a desperate attempt to fill a loveless void in his life.
And the icing on the cake for me was the vivid capturing of the era that was the middle 1980s; this book brings that lost culture of my adolescence back to me, if only for a little while.
As for whether or not it brought any tears to my eye - well, I'm keeping that detail to myself. ;) Many thanks to Ms. McNaught for a wonderful reading experience. |
