Maureen Paschal is a modern day researcher who begins a journey back into the past, and discovers the history of Mary Magdalene. Maureen is not the only one interested in Mary Magdalene's story, as there are those who believe Maureen is THE EXPECTED ONE as well as those who would oppose her at every turn. Just what is the story that Mary Magdalene has to tell Maureen?
Let me preface any further comments by stating that I listened to the abridged audio version. Therefore, some of my concerns may have to do specifically with the format.
THE EXPECTED ONE is a book I've wanted to read, even tried to read in the past, as there was so much hype about it. Sadly, this version did not live up to the hype. Instead, the book appeared to waver between two entirely different plots with no real meeting ground at all between the storylines. Was it supposed to be a retelling of the story of Jesus in which Mary Magdalene played just as an important role as Jesus? Or was it about a treasure hunt in which there were those who opposed any thoughts of changes to the history of Jesus as described in the Bible? The two storylines could have met and merged into one fantastic story but instead the past seemed to overwhelm the present, leaving me wondering as to what was the actual point of the story.
Initially, THE EXPECTED ONE starts off almost in the mode of THE DA VINCI CODE. Maureen has clues to unravel as she delves into the world of artists such as Botticelli, searching for the clues that will lead her to the lost scrolls of Mary Magdalene. However, the momentum is quickly lost as the mysteries begin unraveling with no true resolution. Was Kathleen McGowan's point simply to refute the Biblical version of events? Regardless, the storyline became tired and dreary as I listened to what was essentially a retelling of the Biblical story of the life and death of Jesus but with the slant of Jesus being the husband and true love of Mary Magdalene as they purposely sought for Jesus to fulfill prophecy. THE EXPECTED ONE is easily forgettable and I have to admit that by the last disk of the audio, I was ready for it just to end.
