♥♥♥♥♥ Insights into politics and environmental issues
I, like Scott above, could not put this book down despite the fact that it is political and technical in some areas - a non-fiction page turner. The author, Bruce Barcott, has crafted a fascinating insight to the development of Belize that showcases the impact of politics, corruption and the difficulties of dealing with unscrupulous corporations. This problem is not unique to Belize. It is duplicated in many countries in Central and South America as they face difficult choices and political shinanigans. I recently returned from Costa Rica where many of these same issues and pressures can be seen in and around Tamarindo. In Costa Rica it is beachfront real estate developments that involve huge sums of money, political pressure and land acquisitions by foreign buyers that put terrible pressures on Leatherback Turtles and many other species in the area. Corruption & ecomomic inequalities do a lot of damage but somehow we have to find a balance between the natural world and the world that requires growth and development. it's truly a balancing act and I'm not sure we can solve it, but if we don't, I'm afraid we're destined to find the world a very different place than we currently enjoy. Barcott's book brings this home in vey real terms.
