Valuable principles, but showing its age
|
If you put it under the right perspective you can extract good information out of this book. It is a self-development/motivational text that presents a method to accumulate wealth, developed by the author by studying the lives of several successful men.
I was a bit annoyed by the author's writing style, as it feels more like preaching than talking to me, not to mention the irritating use of ALL CAPS (stop yelling at me! :D) to highlight portions of the text he considers important.
And that leads to the main thing to bear in mind while reading this book: it was written 70 years ago. The world changed, people changed and well, the way books are written changed.
With that mindset, one more thing to do when reading it is to replace the words "rich" and "money" for "success" or "happiness". As it was targeted at the millions of people that went broke after the Great Depression, the author encourages the reader to develop a strong desire to have money and become rich, but I think the principles outlined in the book can be used to achieve a broader goal (he actually mentions this briefly on the final chapters, but knowing it in advance will help).
The information in it is the standard self-development stuff (control your thoughts to control you life, have persistence, surround yourself with other successful people, ...) but it does contain ideas I didn't find in other books, like chapter 11 "The Mystery Of Sex Transmutation". It may be a good read if you like the genre only because it is a classic, but if you are looking for a casual read on the subject I'd look somewhere else. |
