Follow your own rules, Leonard!

I love Elmore Leonard. This was a decent novel, but not as good as [[ASIN:0060724234 The Hot Kid]], which in turn was not as good as the short story "How Carlos Webster....."
On its own, I'd give this book four stars. However, reading it as the sequel it is was frustrating. The characters were consistent (unlike some other Leonard stories, where he has re-used a character's name but completely changed the personality). My problem was with the sloppy exposition and backstory. He basically crammed the entire plot of The Hot Kid into half a dozen awkward scenes of dialog. At another point, the protagonist "imagines" an entire conversation with another character. The scene reads as if it was written as a telephone conversation and then hastily changed to an imaginary conversation during editing, to prevent a plot hole.
From any other (read: lesser) writer I'd probably have been able to ignore these small failings. But coming from Leonard, any such sloppiness is glaring.
To my eyes, it seems like a bunch of crap was shoehorned into the second draft, and Leonard never bothered to go back and smooth it out.
OK, enough complaining. I've got forty other great Elmore Leonard books on my shelves I can read whenever I want to. |
