Tim Weiner's thesis that the CIA was absolutely incompetent on every level and run by fools and nazi like rogues. This view is unrelenting and horrifying in the details. I don't doubt his facts. I had no idea that the book would take this approach when I started reading it. But the more I read the more obvious it became that Mr. Weiner was not going to write a single good thing about anyone or anybody connected with the CIA over the last 60 years. If you are looking for a balanced view of the CIA in the context of its mission and what it was facing in the world at that time you won't find it here..
What I find difficult to comprehend in view of this supposed incompetent, disfunctional and out of control agency is that the United States WON the Cold War and remains the most powerful nation on earth. How could that be? Somebody somewhere must have done somthing right.
I think we need a CIA in the world we live in. There are bad guys out there. I truly hope that the CIA learns from all the mistakes in the past and gets a lot more right in the future. |
