I Am Legend description
One of the most influential vampire novels of the 20th century, I Am Legend regularly appears on the "10 Best" lists of numerous critical studies of the horror genre. As Richard Matheson's third novel, it was first marketed as science fiction (for although written in 1954, the story takes place in a future 1976). A terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears to be immune to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he is the outsider. He is the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different from everyone else. Employing a stark, almost documentary style, Richard Matheson was one of the first writers to convince us that the undead can lurk in a local supermarket freezer as well as a remote Gothic castle. His influence on a generation of bestselling authors--including Stephen King and Dean Koontz--who first read him in their youth is, well, legendary. --Stanley Wiater

Zach T. review of I am Legend by Richard Matheson, March 17, 2008.

I am Legend is a story about Robert Neville, the last man on earth and his struggle to survive, learn, and adapt. In 1975, a plague devastates the world, changing all of the people into vampires. These vampires are like most of the vampire in stories, but cannot turn into bats, and can only come out at night, the sun will kill them. As Robert keeps on living by himself, he becomes curious as to why certain things affect the vampires the way that they do. He studies the blood and discovers that a germ has caused all of the people to die and become vampires. A year or so later, Robert is sitting on his porch and sees a woman walking in a field during the day. He calls out to her, and she runs away. He chases her, and after a quick struggle, he calms her down, takes her into his house and talks to her about what he knows about the vampires. He is suspicious of her because he thought he was the only human left, so when he tests her blood, she knocks him out just before he can look. This is because she really was a vampire, but the germ was in an early stage of its development and others like her had made a drug that would keep the germ from developing. When Robert wakes up he learns all of this in a note left by the woman he also learns that she had been sent to spy on him. A few weeks later he is captured, moved to another building, and is executed.
