Sometimes revenge can go too far

I loved this book and spent the whole night reading it. A great sequel to Devil's Lady (excellent book too). Here the hero marries the heroine for revenge. Turns out the man (heroine's uncle) who made Nicholas suffer and almost cause his death is already dead. So Nicholas has all this pent up angry energy that he needs to unleash. I couldn't wait to find out what sort of revenge Nicholas would extract upon his wife. His need for vengeance is all consuming and he is literally suffocating mentally and emotionally for it. Gillian is fascinating as the 'victim', if you could call her that. She doesn't take to the revenge notion meekly and gives Nicholas a run for his money.
This is probably the best medieval revenge book that I've ever read. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because of the absolutely ridiculous reason for the revenge. Why would Nicholas punish a completely innocent woman? A woman whom he knows never knew her own uncle. I know he gave the reason of her having 'tainted blood' and all that, but I just don't buy it. So I tried to ignore that aspect of the book and enjoy the wonderful characterizations and increasing sexual tension.
Recommended. If you like this type of medieval I suggest you read other Simmons books such as the De Burgh series. |
