I would not have missed this novel for the world. After MIDNIGHT AWAKENING I looked forward to this one. However, I think Tegan's story will always be my favorite. This one is Rio's story and furthers the plot line of the "Ancient" who was hidden in a cave. It was somewhat disappointing in that there is no closure only further questions about the plans of the "son of Dragos" who has control of the "Ancient".
Rio is the Breed warrior who was betrayed by his breedmate, Eva, she wanted him out of the Order and to herself. Now she has appeared to Dylan Alexander, who can see female ghosts. Rio is so hurt and disfigured he plans to kill himself. He has blackouts and seizures and He is afraid he will hurt someone or do something awful while out of his mind.
Dylan is a reporter for a sleazy magazine. She is traveling near Prague when she is led by a ghost woman to a cave, the cave Rio is hiding in. When she later returns to take pictures of the cave to go with a story she is writing, Rio tries to stop her from taking pictures. But he is weak and very confused by lack of blood, so she escapes.
Rio quickly realizes he has failed in his duty to the Order, he should have sealed the cave months ago. Now he must find the woman and destroy the pictures while scrubbing her mind of the knowledge she has found. Rio finds her and brings her to Boston to the compound. HE also finds that she is a Breedmate. She bares the distinctive birthmark on her neck. Now she must be told who and what she is and she must be given a choice about going free after a mind scrub or living in one of the Darkhavens.
Her mother has cancer and is in the hospital. Dylan can't do anything as long as her mother needs her. While at the hospital she sees a ghost she knows, who was a runaway from the help house her mother runs. She begs Dylan to stop the killing and save her "sisters".
Now not only does Rio have to face his desire for Dylan he must figure out what is happening to the women she sees. HOw are they connected to Dylan and her mother. And how Dylan and her mother are connected to the "son of Dragos".
I enjoyed parts of the book but it was draggy in places, and the small amount of information the book reveals about the ongoing plot, seems to mean this will be a long drawn out plot about the "Ancient". Maybe the next one will be better. Still, this is a good series and one out of four ain't bad. The other three, KISS OF MIDNIGHT, KISS OF CRIMSON, and MIDNIGHT AWAKENING, are excellent.
