Very boring

The previous negative reviews have nailed all the problems with this book except one, which was the one that most got me while trying to read this book. Instead of studying and internalizing the primary sources he researched in order to create a flowing narrative, Beschloss just takes one short quote after another and actually turns them directly into his narrative.
Not a direct quote, but an example of what he does: George Washington "wanted to win" the war so he "hired many soldiers..." and "went against the British". Washington "knew what he was doing" and "did so." It was this kind of action that "won the terrible war."
I was shaking my head in disbelief, thinking at first that it had to just be a temporary convention he was utilizing for a few pages, but it never ended. I can do that if I go to the library and take out a bunch of books. There's no narrative interpretation and no critical analysis...not to any interesting degree.
I really wanted this book to work for me, my dad gave it to me for my birthday and was so excited that he'd picked a book he thought looked great (and paid full cover price for!) I didn't get past John Adams. |
