I am a fan of Coetzee and have read many of his previous works and loved them. Disgrace is one of my all-time favourites but this one left me feeling cheated. The book began with promise and I loved his characterizations of Paul and Marijana but with the introduction of the mysteriour Elizabeth, the book began to spiral downward and didn't bounce back. I had to struggle to finish it and felt let down. I wouldn't recommend this for my book group, which is why I wanted to read it. We loved discussing his other works.
Maybe I wasn't in the mood to delve into the inner psyches of the characters but this one left me cold. |
