Book Club Book - my suggestion for the month

| I read The Book of Ruth so I wanted to check out her first book and so I chose it as my book club book without reading it first. I was a little shocked to find that this was a kind of like a romance book with a whole lot of sex going on. Pninah and Hannah are best friends at the beginning of the book but become rivals when married to the same man, Elkanah. It does show the ancient world was as complicated with basic human desires and problems that we face in the present. Both women are uncommonly educated in this novel and later become friends (again) as well as rivals. Phinah, the first wife whom Elkanah desires but does not love, seeks a relationship with another man to fulfill her. Hannah, who has trouble conceiving, promises God that her son will be dedicated to Him if he "opens up her womb". That promise fulfilled, she does indeed offer Samuel to God and he lives in the temple. Samuel becomes a great prophet of the Jewish people but he, like others, has desires and wants that go against what God intended. I found this book interesting and hope that the book club "forgives" me for a selection that has so much sex. It could make for a very interesting discussion though! |
