What a stunning book this is. Jan Perkowski has selected from various primary and secondary sources, narrowing the field to precisely those areas in which the original Slavic vampire was "born" in men's minds, and shows the wealth of material available to those who seriously wish to research this dark area of human imagination.
The minds of men are always fertile ground for later speculation. Why, we think, did they think of such things? What was the rationale? What coloured their ideas? What birthed these thoughts?
This is a terrific resource, and I thoroughly recommend it be on the shelf of anyone who is interested in following up this fascinating subject. Well-written, well-supported, and well-chosen... an invaluable tool for clear thinking and a glimpse into the heart of the macabre.
A WORD OF CAUTION!
The list price of this book was around $10 when it was in print. Since its having gone out of print, second-hand copies are being offered at grossly inflated prices, clearly in the hope that the scarcity of the title will somehow validate their high price.
I was lucky enough to purchase this title directly from the publisher - they had one copy still in the warehouse. They informed me also that they are currently working on an omnibus of Perkowski's writings, and this book will be included.
Therefore I very strongly suggest prospective buyers get in touch with Slavica Publishing and ask to be informed when the omnibus becomes available - it will certainly be a great collection, and priced much more fairly than the en-fattened prices s/h dealers are putting onto this o/p edition. If you can wait, the omnibus is due to be released later this year. |
