A missed opportunity

I feel the same way about this book as I do about Pattie Boyd's recent memoir. Like Pattie, Mr. Mansfield was an "insider" whose book gets too bogged down in naming what hip restaurants he ate at, what cool clothes he wore, and other superficial details.
I mean, he was on the roof for The Beatles last ever performance and the main thing I take away from what must have been an incredible experience is that it was a very cold day and he wore a white trench coat.
Plus, I have to say that if this is being billed as a "Beatles" book, readers should be warned that there are also plenty of stories about him working with other artists such as the Beach Boys, Waylon Jennings, and Jessi Colter. There's even a couple of pages about his work on a David Cassidy album that was never released. That could have been left out.
It's a shame. Mr. Mansfield's life has been full of amazing opportunities and even more amazing people. I just wish he could have expressed his incredible journey in a better manner. |
