Unlike the majority of reviewers, I loved this Ya Ya book so much that in MY mind it surpassed the original, the only one I could ever stomach. The reason may be that I had the pleasure of listening to the unabridged CD, beautifully read, with all accents intact, by Judith Ivey.
I did not mind the disjointedness, the jumps between the generations and different time periods, or the quick changes from sad to frightening to glorious. To me, it was simply stream of consciousness. I felt after "reading" (listening to) this book that I had a much better understanding of the Ya Yas, and especially of Vivi, who comes across MUCH more sympathetically in this book than in any of the previous ones.
I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this book, although I can see and even agree with some of the negative comments other reviewers have made. Maybe it's because I had no expectations beforehand? I don't know...all I can do is present another point of view! |
