I very much enjoyed the first two books in this series but was rather let down by the third. While I love Iain Banks' work in general, and his Culture books in particular, I can't say this is one of his better efforts. Matter is a book plagued by poor pacing, too many forgettable characters, and just a general lack of interesting things to say.
