Robert Holdstock's Mythago Wood is an underappreciated, yet significant contribution to the fantasy genre in many ways. To start out with, the work is well written and conveys a dark and mystical mood in a forest setting. Also the plot of Mythago Wood is anything but formulaic; nevertheless, the events in the book move along at a steady pace.

I loved Mythago Wood, and yet it was with reluctance I bought Lavondyss. Lavondyss was a place simply hinted at in the first book, so intriguing that if there was a chance of it being expanded upon in further books, it would be worth the buy. I was not dissapointed. Nothing against other reviews or the snippets on the back cover of this book, but calling Holdstock a great fantasy writer is like calling Einstein a great file clerk.
