Funniest autobio I've read
|
This is without doubt one of the most classic autobiographies around, if only for the fact that it's non-stop humor! Not only is there at least one good one-liner per page, almost all of which are good and many truly great, but the stories are written with a comedy master's sense of not one wasted word. All sinew and no gristle; if the word ain't contributing to a joke, it's out!
While some may lament the lack of detail concerning his early life, it was clearly no fun and his mom was a real piece of work, so why focus on that? He seems very kind to everyone, all told, including his uncaring family. That he was this funny while still being a nice guy says a lot.
The concision of each joke and story makes you realize that great comedy writing is all about timing. No one ever touched RD for timing; watch some of his stand-ups when he's happening and he always comes in again just as reaction to the last joke is peaking. After a while the audience is gasping for air they're laughing so hard.
As in his stand-up work, there are more laughs in a minute from Rodney here than in an hour from most other comics. Sometimes it's corny, but sometimes it's dead-on. His batting percentage is high...as was he most of the time!
Extra points for his openness about the health benefits of smoking funny cigarettes, which he started in 1942. Seems to have treated him well, as he wrote this in 2004! Where's the "inevitable" lung cancer, surgeon general? He mentions many other famous smokers, including Tony Bennett (his autobio is also great and he is also open about his love of mother nature) and Jackie Gleason. One day the truth will come out and the drug pushing pharm companies will all be out of biz when folks realize they can cure themselves for free with something completely natural, and no side effects for which more drugs are needed. What a scam they've got going. Dangerfield understood and deserves kudos for being honest here.
Rodney was a real classic, and this book truly does his comic genius justice. I'm guessing there are at least 500 good laughs in this book.
You got my respect, buddy. |
